6 SAILS
Almost 12 months to the day since the
old rotten old sails were removed from Heage windmill, for safety sake, a new
set arrived on site at 8.00am. The sails have been made in Boston by
'Traditional Millwrights' and were transported to the mill in the small
hours of the morning to avoid traffic problems with the large, ungainly, load.
Fitting of two of the sails with shutter attached was completed on the morning
of Friday, 31st March. The third sail will be placed in store , to be fitted
later in the year. The new sails, made of laminated Siberian Spruce, have been
specially pressure treated with preservative to ensure maximum possible life.
The Trustees and Friend of Heage Windmill have worked ceaselessly to ensure that
sufficient funds were raised for the sails. and for other essential work on the
mill, and have now exceeded the required £32K.
The sails have been fitted just in time for the start of the 2006 season. The
Windmill reopened to the public at 11am on Saturday, 1st April. The opening
ceremony was performed by local celebrity, singer and actor John Tams. The Mill
will then be open every weekend and Bank Holiday between 11am and 4pm, until the
end of October.
